To measure quantitatively the need for forest rehabilitation, a set of equations that yielded an index (FKNI) was formulated and tested in a case study of Mindoro, Philippines. It used Landsat TM data (NDVI image to derive land cover) and thematic maps (land use, land classification, elevation, existing projects, municipal boundary and erosion intensity) which were processed in microBRIAN and ARC/INFO'S GRID. Spatial analysis was focused on determining the net forestation area and erosion condition of two municipalities. Incorporating the relevant factors, it was concluded that FRNI is useful in prioritizing forest rehabilitation projects and allocation of input resources. |
