Inhoud: The effects of atmospheric optical depth on the satellite image characteristics have been studied using a Landsat TM image coupled with an atmospheric model so as to simulate images at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) for different atmospheric aerosol contents. The statistical properties of the simulated TOA image differs from that of the original image and aerosol content influences significantly the classification of surface features using satellite sensor images. With the increase of optical depth standard deviation of the image decreases appreciably in the two bands. In both the bands, the immediate effect of atmospheric scattering is to reduce the contrast between different surface types. For a given aerosol content, the different surface features are not equally affected. In TM band 1, scattering shifts the gray levels of the image towards higher values for soil, vegetation and water whereas, in TM band 4, gray levels are shifted towards lower value for soil and vegetation and towards higher values for water.
