Inhoud: The Munsell color system allows easy soil color notation in the field. Its use is widespread so that there is a huge amount of soil color data available particularly in soil maps. The expression of the three attributes of soil color Hue, value, chroma) in a simple numeric code which is used in this study, allows interpretation of the relationships between color and soil reflectance. These expressions can be estimated from Munsell color using conversion tables. In a series of 80 surface soil samples, the simple numeric codes were found to be correlated with the reflectance measured in the field for visible and near infrared spectral bands. Soil spectra were obtained in situ both in dry and moist condition, using a SPOT simulated hand-held radiometer with three bands. The interesting results shown that Munsell coordinates translated into the RGB coordinates are strongly correlated to the three spectral bands and the brightness index. These relationships can be applied for the estimation of the bare soil spectral properties from the soil color data provided by existing soil maps. This could be of great help for removing the “soil noise”; from the vegetation spectral indices and conversely, these results may be used for soil surface color remote sensing with SPOT.
