Contents: Quantification of short-term carbon dynamics caused due to land use changes, forms one of the important study in tropical regions, due to increased anthrapogenic activities on selected ecosystems. In the present study, an attempt has been made to quantify the carbon dynamics through mathematical modeling of Land Use / Land Cover (LU / LC) changes. Digital change image from satellite data, over two time periods has been used as an input in studying LU/LC changes, and thereby carbon dynamics. Ground based taxonomic studies have been done together with phytosociological studies for deriving information relating to species composition and biomass. Information pertaining to LU/LC has been mathematically modeled through land use transition matrix, with leading diagonal elements representing the changes in category of carbon accumulation and off-diagonal elements representing the changes in land use over a period of time. Total carbon flux has been modelled by taking area estimates of LU/LC changes of two time periods and carbon factors for soil and standing biomass. Results of the study suggested that over a period of two years from 1996 to 1998 from the mixed dry deciduous and dry deciduous forests, the total carbon which was 75975 tC in 1996 has been reduced to 75473.4 t C in 1998, suggesting a loss of 502 t C. Overall, the present study attempts to highlight the short-term changes in forest ecosystems caused due to land use changes, in one of the study area, pertaining to tropical deciduous forests of India.
