The presence of the adjacency effect has been observed in Thematic Mapper imagery. The adjacency effect represents the blurring of boundaries due to scattering from atmospheric particulates. Edge response functions have been obtained from a random sample of field edges in central Illinois. A comparison of the widths of the line-spread function for upwind edges of an urban area against those downwind edges of the urban area demonstrates the presence of atmospheric blurring. A similar comparison is made of the distance required for the radiance to reach the mean of the asymtotic and edge values. This distance, called the half length, is compared to the results of a radiative transfer calculation. |
