Inhoud: The use of geographic information systems (GIS) in developing countries has increased over the past decade as planners, resource managers, and researchers have embraced the technology to address a wide range of issues and questions. GIS technology in the developing world, however, warrants critical examination. One of the most alarming problems concerns the inaccuracy of and discrepancies among existing data sources. This article documents the experience of a foreign researcher who used GIS to assess land-cover change in the vicinity of the upper Percey River watershed, located in the Andean foothills of southern Argentina. The study revealed remarkable differences in land cover between a 1994 preliminary forest inventory and the final forest inventory released in 1997; 45.16 percent of the area analyzed experienced change. Discrepancies of a similar magnitude were also found between 1981 aerial photographs and 1981 topographic maps, both of which were produced by Argentina's national mapping institution, the Instituto Geografico Militar (Military Geographic Institute). Results presented in this article demonstrate the importance of evaluating the integrity and accuracy of existing data before they are incorporated in a GIS-based project.
