  Jemaah Islamiyah's radical madrassah networks

Title: Jemaah Islamiyah's radical madrassah networks
Author: Magouirk, Justin
Atran, Scott
Appeared in: Dynamics of asymmetric conflict
Paging: Volume 1 (2008) nr. 1 pages 25-41
Year: 2008-03
Contents: Using our Global Transnational Terrorism (GTT) database, we examine the importance of radical madrassahs for Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) in Southeast Asia, both for the overall JI network and for individual attack networks. We argue that madrassah networks serve multiple purposes - ideological indoctrination, focal point creation, and leadership training - and are an important policy issue that should not be ignored. We conclude that unraveling terrorist social networks is the key to a successful counterterrorism policy in Southeast Asia.
