Jaar: 1998
Inhoud: The publication of an interview with alleged heist mastermind and prison escapee Colin Chauke in the Sunday newspaper City Press in February this year has again raised questions about the conduct of South African journalists. One of the questions posed by various interest groups - including other newspapers - was whether journalistic conduct was ethical in this instance. In this article the author argues that both branches of philosophical ethics - namely meta- and normative ethics - could be used to find the answer to this question. In the last section of the article these categories of ethics are utilised to evaluate the performance of the journalistis involved in the reporting of the Chauke incident. In terms of the normative framework applied in the evaluation of this particular report, it becomes apparent that there is room for improvement in journalistic conduct on both these ethical levels.
