Inhoud: The computer is accepted unconditionally in certain circles as a training resource. However, there is still much confusion on the subject, mainly because of the technology and training strategy choices that have to be made. Although Computer-based Training (CBT) is a complex training medium that requires high levels of expertise of trainers and developers, it is proving to be one of the most dramatic and effective applications of computer technology. The interactive and visual nature of CBT are the most important features that distinguish it from conventional training methods. CBT also has the ability to provide individualised training on a broad selection of topics. It can be used to reach students or employees in remote locations not normally accessible to conventional training. It also sets the trainer free to develop more rewarding training and to objectively evaluate the student's performance. In this article the writer provides a broad overview of the development and current status of CBT, the categories of application, the instructional design and development of CBT courses and the assessment of the desirability and effectivity of CBT as an alternative training medium.
