Television as a mass communication medium is accessible, contemporary and does not require recipients to be verbally literate. However, recipients' natural interest in television viewing does not necessarily mean that visual images are understood. The universality of visual communication is implicit in visual literacy, and is particularly important in the case of television, especially in a culture dominated by verbal language. The assumption is made that children will become visually literate due to the number of hours spent watching television. It is debatable, however, whether any correlation may be inferred between increased exposure to television and ability to interpret televisual images critically. In this article the author investigates the various principles and approaches to the concept: visual literacy to determine, amongst others, the similarities and/or differences between visual and verbal language. Furthermore, the processes and variables involved in the construction and interpretation of meaning by means of television, as a mass communication medium, are investigated to describe television as a form of visual language.
