On May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge assumed a prominent site in New York Harbor. Although most canonical accounts attribute the Bridge to John A. Roebling (1806-1869) and his son Colonel Washington Roebling (1837-1926), its final builder was the Colonel's wife, Emily Warren Roebling (1843-1907). Using journalistic accounts from the time of the bridge's construction and research produced over the past century, this essay investigates the exclusion, silence, and subterfuge that have characterized descriptions of Emily Roebling. Her inclusion in the history of die bridge's development serves to locate the Bridge within a broader discussion of gender and public space. |
