RE-ACTIVATING THE DOCILE BODY: A Critical (Re)View of Diller and Scofidio's Slow House

Titel: RE-ACTIVATING THE DOCILE BODY: A Critical (Re)View of Diller and Scofidio's Slow House
Auteur: Bremner, Alex
Verschenen in: Architectural theory review
Paginering: Jaargang 5 (2000) nr. 1 pagina's 104-122
Jaar: 2000-04
Inhoud: In recent times the work of American architects Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio has received considerable publicity for its interrogative and 'iconoclastic' attitude toward conventional and normalising architectural discourse. However, although causing quite a stir in architectural debate at the time, their Slow House project of 1989 still remains a somewhat enigmatic gesture of architectural thought and invention. The intention of this paper is to reconsider some of the major themes evident in the work by offering three distinct yet related interpretations concerning the design's relationship to form, image, and the human. The purpose of such an analysis is to offer an explicative and more probing examination of the house in relation to some of the prominent and broader epistemological issues confronting architecture today than much of the topical literature affords. Science manipulates things and gives up living in them. Maurice Merleau-Ponty
