American architects Marion Mahony and Walter Burley Griffins' personal and professional relationship spans some 35 years, cut short by his premature death in 1937. Together, they worked on architectural, planning and landscape projects in the USA, Australia and India, developing a distinctive formal and theoretical position. This paper reviews the resurgence of interest in the Griffins, and argues that their contribution can be viewed as a product of a creative partnership, nurtured by different but complementary personal, intellectual and creative strengths, and shared spiritual beliefs. The paper explores the idea of creative partnerships, and reflects on the position of women in a profession that has been dominated by the idea of architect as hero.1
