MAINTAINING AN IMAGE OF OBJECTIVITY: Reflections on an Institutional Anxiety

Title: MAINTAINING AN IMAGE OF OBJECTIVITY: Reflections on an Institutional Anxiety
Author: Hogben, Paul
Appeared in: Architectural theory review
Paging: Volume 6 (2001) nr. 1 pages 63-75
Year: 2001-04
Contents: To continue the critique of the positivist division of subject and object and its presence in architectural education and practice, the paper aims to introduce a number of topics that have eluded this critique so far. These topics relate to the institutional events and attitudes that have contributed to the development of architectural discourse in Australia, especially the production of architectural criticism. The paper shows how, in the late 1950s and 1960s, there was a conjunction of forces around the desire to keep architectural commentary 'objective' that writers should only describe the 'actual facts' of a building without letting their personal opinions effect their descriptions. These desires were related to concerns about the appearance of architectural criticism: who could offer it, what qualifications needed to be made, and what form it could lake. The paper argues that this preoccupation with objectivity in building analysis was closely tied to institutional anxieties over the public image of the profession and the ability of architects to speak a language that appealed to corporate clients These anxieties were behind the image of technical expertise the profession was attempting to construct for itself.
