The study of history always informs arclutectural practice. The most widely accepted historical method focuses on past styles and consequently urges designers to create a new one. This essay promotes a different, more flexible, relationship between past and present. Two interpretative strategies are outlined. One illuminates current architectural problems by discerning their sources and devebpment over time. The second brings to light hitherto forgotten theories and practices which are useful to the architect. Investigated in these ways, history both contributes to the critique of current limited design practices and suggests alternative strategies. |
