  ABORIGINAL SIGNS AND ARCHITECTURAL MEANINGS

Titel: ABORIGINAL SIGNS AND ARCHITECTURAL MEANINGS
Auteur: Memmott, Paul
Verschenen in: Architectural theory review
Paginering: Jaargang 2 (1996) nr. 1 pagina's 38-64
Jaar: 1996-11
Inhoud: The second part of this paper deals with a a number of particular designs for town plans and buildings which have been prepared for Aboriginal clients and which illustrate attempts to incorporate two- and three-dimensional signs relevant to Aboriginal culture. Although the designs were prepared for Aboriginal clients, the users were not necessarily Aboriginal people. This raises the issue of public meaning versus private meaning in architectural symbolism, and the difficulty of communicating public meaning through a building's image without understanding inner cultural meaning. One has to differentiate the various categories of clients, gain understanding of their respective knowledge bases, then choose the messages to be communicated to each respective category, Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal or both, and design accordingly.
