The ankle structures of the earliest archosaurian reptiles are reviewed. It is suggested that primitive archosaurs possessed a duplex ankle joint, with rudiments of both the mesotarsal and the 'crocodiloid' joints found in advanced archosaurs. This suggestion makes it possible to explain archosaur history without postulating reversals and convergences in ankle structure. |
