Contents: The FTIR spectra of group 1a metal sulphates, M2S04, were measured in argon, krypton and xenon matrices at the temperature of 10±1 K. Measurements were carried out in the medium and far infrared regions in order to assign the molecular vibrations and particularly those due to the modes of the coordinated metals. The vibrational assignment was supported by theoretical calculations providing the binding energy of the stable equilibrium configurations and the respective vibrational frequencies. The stability of the two stable forms of D2d and C2v symmetry is discussed. The FTIR spectra exclude, on the ground of the experimental and theoretical results, the presence of matrix isolated C2v type M2SO4 molecules.
