It is shown that the 'intermediate symmetry' property of certain ligand configurations first noted by Griffith, can be simply understood in terms of induced representations. Griffith's work is generalized by using superposition model formulae to derive R3 tensor parametrizations of crystal fields for systems with intermediate symmetry. Tables are given for 4-, 6-, 8- and 12-fold coordinations and several examples of their use are discussed in detail. |
