The X-ray scattering cross section for liquid bromine at 20°C has been measured, and compared with other X-ray and neutron diffraction studies of this fluid. The structure function obtained here has been Fourier inverted to obtain a non-bonded bromine atom-bromine atom correlation function. This correlation function is found to differ in several important ways from correlation functions obtained from diffraction studies of other diatomic liquids. A detailed interpretation of the structure of liquid bromine in terms of theoretical and computer simulation models is considered in a companion paper. |
