A theoretical analysis is made of the splittings induced in the levels 7F1, 7F2, 7F3, 7F4, 7F5, 7F6 of the ion Eu3+ by the electric field of the ethyl sulphate lattice. Four parameters are used to fit the data, and it is found that very good agreement can be established between experiment and theory in the great majority of cases. The parameters are compared to the corresponding ones for other rare earth ethyl sulphates. A reason is given for the absence of a magnetic dipole character in the transition 5D1 → 7F1. |
