Napoleon was one of the most prolific writers of the age. One of his obsessions was the postal system. Mail was both slow and liable to be intercepted. Getting despatches through came to be one of the defining constituents of empire. Chappe's optical telegraph offered one practical solution to the problem. Telegraphy not only satisfied Napoleon's desire for speed, but also mirrored his imperial dreams of transnational fusion. Chateaubriand, champion of scripture and literature, cast himself as a rebel, fighting the hypertext and Napoleon. But it is clear that Napoleon derived his concept of the total author from Chateaubriand, just as Chateaubriand found a role model in Napoleon. Under Napoleon's empire, there was a convergence of text, technology and theology. |
