This article explores the use of space and time in La Reclusion solitaire, by Tahar Ben Jelloun, published in 1976. The novel concerns an immigrant worker recently arrived in France, and narrates in the first person the episodes of violence he suffers. An important part of Jelloun's work reflects on the great social questions affecting his people, such as the cultural identity of colonised countries relative to the culture of the coloniser. This novel explores these questions using a variety of narrative techniques, which are analysed here. |
