This article discusses the relation between 19th-century Bonapartism and the reputation of Napoleon I. The author argues that while Bonapartism evolved according to circumstance, ultimately its definition contracted in terms of doctrine and place in the political spectrum. In contrast, the many images that composed Napoleon's reputation continued to allow divergent groups to see in Napoleon what they wanted to see and claim part of his historical legacy. Thus Napoleon escaped Bonapartism and became part of a national patrimony. |
