This article considers the importance of the emergence of collective activity of the unemployed in France at the end of 1997 and the beginning of 1998, and argues that the events represent a qualitatively new departure for organisations formed to aid the unemployed in France. To date, collective protest activities have been organised and ultimately controlled by the trade union movement. This article seeks to place the movement within its historical and political contexts, describes the diverse phases, highlights the characteristics, and analyses the possible repurcussions of the movement for French organisations formed to aid the unemployed. |
