France's hosting of the 1998 World Cup not only fits the French State's traditional use of international sporting events for asserting national grandeur, but suggests both a coming of age of French football itself, and more widely, a statement of national economic and political self-confidence. France 98 may be seen as an example of the particular French relationship between public authorities and sport, in which Republican values pervade areas of civil society where in other European nations, the mission de service public would be unknown. The financial organisation of the Finals also illustrates the way football is becoming an agent of globalisation used by multinational commercial interests, provoking unease among traditional stakeholders in the sport. |
