The political world was surprised when, on 21 April 1997, President Jacques Chirac announced the dissolution of the Assemblee nationale and called a general election, whose two rounds were fixed for 25 May and 1 June. This decision was all the more striking, in light of the size of the right-wing majority in the Assemblee, a majority which would have allowed the government comfortably to stay in power until March 1998. This article examines the issues arising from this decision, and analyses the results, taking into account sociological and geographical as well as political factors. The role of the Front national in a high number of 'triangular' contests is also scrutinised. |
