This essay focuses on an aspect of the early fiction by Idwar al-Kharrat that has been generally overlooked by his critics, namely the representation of his homeland, Egypt. Our literary analysis will show how an allegorical reading is possible whereby the heroines of these works are associated lyrically with Egypt. We will also show how the image of the homeland is affirmed only to be transcended, if not questioned, through the protagonist Mīkha'īl's ambivalent perception of his beloved. The analysis of this aspect of the writer's fiction will highlight how many themes interconnect in it in a highly innovative fashion. |
