With scholars beginning to investigate Arabic literature in the so-called 'Dark Ages' of the Ottoman empire, this article reviews bio-bibliographical resources and literary histories available to those interested in the literature of one region of the empire, Bilad al-Sham. Three works in European languages (by Brockelmann, Graf and Nasrallah) and three in Arabic (by Ka[image omitted][image omitted]ala, Musa Basha and 'Anuti) are presented and the aims and concerns of their authors distinguished. The works are examined to determine how they treat some major issues: do they take anonymous texts and texts in dialect into consideration, do they mention translations, do they treat the whole Ĺ“uvre of authors who wrote in more than one language, and do they regard the confessional identity of authors as of over-riding importance? Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of these works and their contribution to knowledge of Arabic literature in early Ottoman Syria are pointed out, and some directions are suggested for further study of this literature.
