A tubular bioreactor modelled by a partial differential equation (PDE) system is studied here. The state of the system consists of the concentrations of the biomass and growth limiting substrate. Two different sets of boundary conditions are compared in their ability to give a realistic description of the bioreactor. In addition to the well-known Danckwerts conditions the recently proposed Romanainen conditions are applied. The PDE system is semidiscretised by using the method of orthogonal collocation. The behaviour of the system response for the changes in the control, disturbance, and some parameters for the two sets of the boundary conditions are compared. In the second part, an asymptotic observer of state and parameter of the system is derived from the well-known observer theory of Bastin and Dochain. |
