Inhoud: The perivitellin fluid of the eggs of the squid Loligo vulgaris contains a “natural tranquilliser”, which acts on the young animals as they approach the end of embryonic development. It prevents premature hatching, leading to optimum conditions for the survival of well developed juveniles. In this study a chemical and physiological approach is made to define the properties of this natural tranquillising factor (ntr-factor). It is likely to be a polypeptide or a protein of a molecular weight of about 60,000 daltons. The effect of the ntr-factor can be antagonized by the centrally stimulating drugs bicuculline and pentylenetetrazol. An effect very similar to that produced by the ntr-factor is evoked by the purine nucleoside inosine. The results are discussed from two different viewpoints: one concerns the physiological aspects of the late developmental phase of Loligo vulgaris, in particular the possible receptor sites and the mode of action of the ntr-factor in the embryos; the other is the potential interest that squid juveniles may represent for pharmacological research.
