Ragworms, P. dumerilii, are continuously active even when they are kept undisturbed in the laboratory for a period of several days; their behavior tends to be organized in bouts of activity and rest. Sudden stimulation may interrupt the ongoing behaviour by eliciting the withdrawal reflex but it also switches-on a bout of activity; this follows recovery from withdrawal. The relative proportions in which acts occur during such activity is related to the nature of the stimulus. Stimulation also affects the intensity of performance of some acts. |
