Inhoud: Diopatra cuprea orients an extension of its tube in response to complex stimuli from the physical and biological environment. The stimuli of unidirectional current flow in laboratory experiments elicited a directional orientation perpendicular to that flow. By this orientation, sediment influx is reduced and water circulation is enhanced within the main shaft of the tube. Field data from a dense population reveal a tendency to orient perpendicular to the current, but only among isolated individuals. As density increases, orientations become random with respect to the current because individuals tend to orient their tube-caps parallel or perpendicular to one another. This density dependent change in behaviour can be best explained as a functional response to food because Diopatra feed on the epibiota of neighbor's tube-caps in addition to their own tube-caps.
