Inhoud: The circadian activity of the Lesser or Northern Octopus, Eledone cirrhosa and its behaviour was studied in the laboratory under artificial illumination regimes using a 24 hour video recording system. The results show this octopod has a nocturnal pattern of activity under a light-dark cycle (12h light-12h dark). Under the illuminated part of the light-dark cycle the octopus was “Inactive”; with brief cycles of being “Alert”; within the “home”; or shelter. When placed under 24 hour continuous darkness, the nocturnal rhythm did not persist, but was replaced by random patterns of “Active”; behaviour outside the “home”;, and increased periods of being “Alert”;. Under 24 hour continuous light, increased periods of being “Inactive”; within the “home”; occurred. However, occasional periods of “Alert”; and “Active”; behaviour occurred which did coincide with periods that would have been dark under the previous light-dark cycle. These experiments show that although Eledone cirrhosa is more active during periods of reduced illumination, they do not exclude the possibility that an endogenous rhythm driving the activity is also present.
