Title: Income-free time trade-off preferences of U.S. workers: A review of literature and indicators
Author: Best, Fred

Stern, Barry
Appeared in: Leisure sciences
Paging: Volume 2 (1979) nr. 2 pages 119-141
Year: 1979
Contents: This study was undertaken to assess whether and to what extent the American people are willing to give up some income in exchange for more free time. Included as indicators were behavioral data concerned with work hours and collective bargaining agreements, attitudinal studies, and consumer expenditure reports. Findings were as follows: (1) increments in income are preferred more than increments in free time; (2) the gap of preference between income and free time may be declining; (3) future increases in free time are preferred in extended periods such as vacations rather than reduc tions in the workday or workweek; and (4) the way in which potential free time is scheduled is a likely determinant of whether workers want more free time at the cost of income.
