The Construction of Subjectivity in Educational Television. Part 1: towards a new agenda

Titel: The Construction of Subjectivity in Educational Television. Part 1: towards a new agenda
Auteur: Buckingham, D. D.
Verschenen in: Learning, media and technology
Paginering: Jaargang 13 (1987) nr. 2 pagina's 137-145
Jaar: 1987
Inhoud: An earlier paper (Buckingham, 1986) sought to identify the definitions of teaching and learning which have informed educational broadcasters' rationales for their work. This paper is the first of three case studies which will consider how these definitions are manifested in the textual strategies of specific programmes. The ultimate aim of this analysis is to develop a theoretical framework which will account for the particular ways in which educational television addresses its viewers and seeks to implicate them in the learning process. The article is in two parts. This first part discusses critically previous analyses of children's television and educational television from two main paradigms, those of Media Studies and of Educational Psychology. It goes on to propose an alternative mode of investigation which examines the forms of subject positioning employed within television. This approach attempts to make connections between theories of discourse developed within Film and Literary Studies, and accounts of subjectivity provided by recent critical work in Child Psychology. The second part of the article, which will be published in a subsequent issue, provides an illustration of this approach in an analysis of the BBC series for preschool children, You and Me..
