A Lady's Portrait by Maerten van Heemskerck by August Hahr. — The author draws attention to a lady's portrait in the possession of Mr. Gosta Stenman, Stockholm, dated 1528 and generally attributed to Maerten van Heemskerck (fig. 1). He compares it with two portraits in Dutch collections (fig. 2 & 3; one with fragment of a signature: kerc) which must also have been done by Heemskerck when a pupil of Jan Scorel. The works of the master from this period differ favourably from the mannered style of the pictures he subsequently painted after his return from Italy (1537). |
