The Meister der Magdalenenlegende in the Historical Society of New York by Johnny Roosval.—Augustus and the Sibylla are represented on a painting belonging to the Historical Society of New York, formerly attributed to Schongauer. The author gives it to the Meister der Magdalenenlegende one of the many anonymous artists defined by Max Friedlander (see his Niederlandische Malerei XII, p. 15), proving this attribution by comparing the picture with some acknowledged works by the Magdalen Master in Budapest and Copenhagen. In accordance with the thesis of Emile Male about the importance of the miracle plays for the iconography of the 15th century etc., he identifies the three figures to the right of Augustus as the emperor's senechal, prevot and connetable. The women to the left are ladies in attention of the Sibylla Tiburtina. |
