Inhoud: Marie-Jeanne Buseau was seventeen years old when she married Francois Boucher, then thirty, in 1733. Her husband is said to have used her as a model for his mythological compositions, but she never appears nude in any painting of an erotic nature. Marie-Jeanne began working as an artist in her own right in the mid-sixties. There are, however three drawings of an earlier date that may safely be attributed to her in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. The key is Soap Bubbles (Fig. 1), because of an inscription by C. G. Tessin: Mme Boucher apres which is placed immediately in front of her husband's autograph signature: f. boucher. It is a pen drawing, hesitatingly done in grey ink; there is a noticeable uncertainty in form, and shadows are rendered in hatching. Over this, there is a rapid, forceful brown wash, obviously added by Francois Boucher. Mme Boucher completed her part of the drawing before 1742. As her model she had taken one of her husband's paintings, the date of which has been established as 1734. Stylistic affinities to this drawing can be discerned in a Pastoral (Fig. 2) and a water colour—Pan and Syrinx (Fig. 3). The linework in the figures is the same in all three pictures. Furthermore, the foliage and clouds in Pastoral are drawn in the same characteristic way as in Pan and S'yrinx.
