A computer model based on thermodynamic principles was used to investigate the speciation of aluminum in acidic natural water equilibria with mineral phase kaolinite. Compared to the case of equilibria with gibbsite, it was found that dissolved silica, fluoride ion and organic ligands influenced the aluminum speciation remarkably, while the concentrations of polymeric aluminum-hydroxo species were insignificant. The equilibrium of soluble aluminum with kaolinite was two orders lower in magnitude than the equilibrium with gibbsite. This study indicated the potential harmfulness of toxic aluminum species formed in the acidified surface water to aquatic life. |
