Inhoud: The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of ammonium ion exchange from raw water or treated water in bi-solute system to design ammonium exchange process appropriately. Ammonium removal by a natural zeolite was studied with laboratory experiments in bi-solute systems with ammonium and either sodium or potassium ions. Natural zeolite with a mesh size of 12 × 16 was selected in the study. No pretreatment was carried out except washing with distilled water and drying. Ammonium exchange capacity in a bi-solute system with Na+ or K+ was reduced due to the competition with the coexisting cation. Both the expanded Freundlich equation and the expanded Langmuir equation were well fit to the experimental results up to the cation concentration of 200 mg/L. However, neither equation could explain the ammonium exchange capacity properly when the cation concentration was 1000 mg/L. Better fit was obtained when the competition constant and the activity were adopted instead of the concentration in the model equations.
