Inhoud: A two-phase anaerobic process consisting of an acid and a methane phase in series was studied for the conversion of whey to methane. The acid phase was studied at retention times of 8, 16 and 24 h at pH 4 and 5. Retention time of the methane phase was 72 h and the pH was not adjusted during the study. Samples from gas collection systems were analyzed for methane and carbon dioxide composition. Samples from effluent lines of the acid and methane phases were analyzed for suspended solids, volatile solids, volatile acids and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations. It was found that a 24 h retention time of the acid phase at pH 5 was the most effective treatment of whey for producing methane and reducing the pollutional load of the final effluent in the methane phase. This set of experimental conditions produced the largest amount of short chain volatile acids in the acid phase, creating a desirable substrate for the methane phase and for the methane generating microorganisms. The effluent from the methane phase had the lowest amount of volatile acids present, indicating that there was an efficient conversion of volatile acids to methane. The volume of methane production during this time was also noted to be maximum with 0.182 liter of total gas generated in a 24 h period with an average composition of 69% methane.
