The use of PAN or 1-(2-pyridylazo-2) naphthol loaded polyester type foams in extracting trace amounts of heavy metal ions from large volumes of water has been extended to cadmium. The extraction of this metal has been studied at four different (μg/L) concentration levels in water containing cations commonly found in river water. At each of these concentrations, the ratio of micrograms of cadmium extracted to the number of squeezes of foam has been obtained. From a plot of these cadmium concentration levels (in μg/L) against these calculated ratios, the concentration of this element in unknown waters may be semiquantitatively estimated. |
