Inhoud: A linear motion system is frequently part of a wide range of engineering assemblies, such as presses, injection-moulding machines, photocopying machines, overhead gantries, machine tools, transfer mechanisms and a wide variety of other designs. There exist very few support tools or design procedures to assist designers with linear motion subassemblies, particularly at the early stage of a design. This paper deals with the requirements for support systems for the concept stage of the design process and in particular for the neglected area of linear motion systems. In order to form a functional model of a linear motion system it is first necessary to identify the elements and then the methods to represent and handle them. This paper will highlight the problems and considerations necessary to form such a system and will also outline a suitable suite of graphical symbols that have been created for the various elements which can be employed in the functional modelling of mechanical linear motion systems.
