Inhoud: A graphical user interface (GUI) for a data acquisition system that is both easy to use and portable was developed using the X Window System. Previously, application programs for data acquisition had required the use of complex command languages which made them difficult to use and prone to error. In contrast, GUIs allow users to select commands with the click of a mouse button rather than type commands at the keyboard. An interface should not only be easy to use but also easy to modify. Adherence to a standard network-portable windowing environment, such as the X Window System, which is operating system and hardware independent, is necessary in order for the interface to be easily modified for a variety of computer systems. X also provides a set of building blocks, the Athena tool-kit, to aid in the development of graphical interfaces.
