Voter Turnout in the Indian States: An Empirical Analysis

Title: Voter Turnout in the Indian States: An Empirical Analysis
Author: Diwakar, Rekha
Appeared in: Journal of elections public opinion and parties
Paging: Volume 18 (2008) nr. 1 pages 75-100
Year: 2008-02
Contents: In this article, the trends and determinants of voter turnout in India at the state level are explored. It reveals that there is a large variation in turnout across the Indian states. Although turnout in most Indian states has increased over time, there are also many exceptions to this upward trend. These empirical results are consistent with the “rational-voter model”, whereby turnout tends to be higher where elections are closely fought and literacy is higher. Further, a larger electorate and higher proportion of urban population is associated with lower turnout in the Indian states.
