Isomer-free secondary alkane sulfonates' were synthesized from a series of pure secondary alcohols. The C-S bond was formed by thioesterification of the alcohol. A subsequent mild oxidation followed by neutralization generated the monoisomeric sodium sulfonates in good yield. These surfactants were prepared as alternatives to alkane sulfates, which do not have: the requisite thermal stability for many high temperature studies and applications. |
