The effect of an amphiphilic comb-like polymer on the stability of aqueous graphite suspensions was determined. Suspensions of graphite were better dispersed as the concentration of the comb-like polymer was increased. Furthermore, the stability at higher pH values was greater than that at lower values. The electrophoretic mobility of graphite was measured with and without the polymer to determine the mechanism of colloidal stabilization. A combination of steric and electrostatic forces is proposed to be the cause for the observed behavior. |
