In this paper, we continue the investigation of the difference equation[image omitted] Recently, the existence of non-trivial continuous invariants for this equation has been established. We now show that no such invariant can be a rational function. Specifically, we prove that in the context of the equation's associated planar mapping [image omitted] , if [image omitted] is a rational invariant then [image omitted] for some real number λ. Thus, I is constant and hence trivial. The proof is an induction based on a strict linear ordering of the coefficients of P and Q. |
