Traditional agriculture, based on the maximisation of security, was necessary within the context of traditional society, but it is inappropriate for the earning of the money necessary to live in a modern society. For this an individual frequently aims at the maximisation of profits, and in doing so takes risks which a traditional cultivator would not take. It is not just a matter of his working harder, but also his adopting the improved techniques and improved inputs of modern technology2[Schultz, 1964, p. 37]. The constraints preventing a cultivator from adopting improved practices can be classified into two main groups: economic and technical constraints, and personal and cultural constraints. This article will look briefly at how education has contributed to the overcoming of the personal and cultural constraints on the development of farming.
